7 Free Activities for Kids to enjoy in Spring

Spring is the most magical season, right? Just like Narnia when winter is thawing and the world starts coming back to life. Here are some easy and free activity ideas for getting out and about with the kids and witnessing the magic.

Visit the Lambs

It's lambing season! Have a look out for local farms near you that are holding events where you can go and see them. They're often free to enter (with donations welcome), and have other fun things to do like sit on tractors, bouncy castles, photo boards etc.

Alternatively, just go for a lovely country walk across some fields and see if you can spot some lambs that way.

Stargazing

For most kids, spring marks the cusp where they start going go bed when it's still light outside. If you get in there early enough, and get lucky with the weather, then it's a great time for stargazing. Fingers crossed the cold weather is behind us, so it's warm enough to linger out  a while in the evening without bedtime being horribly late.

We love using the free Skyview Lite App to point up and try and work out what everything is, as well as the ISS detector to figure out when the Internation Space Station is going to be flying over us.

Picnic

Finally, the weather is (hopefully) kind enough that we can take picnics on days out, rather than doubling the cost by getting lunch in the cafe.

Having said that, I have had so many picnics in the past couple of years that I also find them not-at-all exciting anymore. I've been experimenting this year, and here are my ideas for affordable picnics that go beyond sandwiches and crisps.

Look Out for Butterflies, and Baby Birds

And all the other signs of life that are springing up everywhere. The buds on the trees, the tulips etc.

As part of the spring printables I made Spring Eye Spy. Print it off and see how many you can tick off.

Painted Eggs

If you want to use a real egg, then you can follow the video here to check how to blow them out.

Or you can buy ceramic/ wooden/ polystyrene ones from places like Hobbycraft, Poundland, the Works.

Try decorating with paint, pens. glitter. You could use glue to stick feathers and other embellishments on them.

Look for Tadpoles

Quick note - by moving frogspawn and tadpoles into different ponds, it could cause them harm, so it's best to enjoy them from a distance. We all know nature needs all the help it can get at the moment.

By March, frogspawn should be plentiful in ponds in the UK. If you do spot some near you, keep going to the same spot to see how it chages, maybe you'll be able to see the full evolution.
