5 Easy Winter Activities for Kids

Check out these fun and easy activities to do with the kids when it's freeeeeeeezing outside. Super cold weather opens up so many interesting opportunities to play around with ice and water and explore the changing states of things when they're left out in the cold. Just remember to wrap up warm and wear gloves!

Make Frozen Bubbles

We just used regular bubble mixture, and blew a lot of them onto the grass. Some of them popped, but some of them froze, and we had fun trying to pick them up.

Make Ice Baubles

We filled an ice cube tray with things we found around the garden; stones, interesting leaves, then filled it with water, with a little loop of wool in each.

Then we waited until the ice had frozen, and we could pick out the ice cubes and hang them off the tree outside, like baubles.

Next time, I'd use something more nature friendly, like biodegradeable twine. Although I was careful to keep checking, and pick up all the bits of wool as I saw that the baubles had melted.

Painting the Ice

We hunted in plant pots, and in crevices for chunks of ice that we could use, and then used food colouring to create masterpieces!

Make an Ice Palace

We made an Ice palace that Elsa would be proud of!

We hunted through the recycling bin for old yoghurt pots and tubs, and filled them with water, adding some food colouring into some of them to add a colourful twist.

When the water was frozen, we pressed out our ice building blocks, to make this house.

Make a Defrosting Potion

We dissolved a tablespoon of table salt in a spray bottle of water, and watched as it worked it's magic in defrosting the windows, the garden table, and the decking.

I found a few places online where it said it wouldn't cause damage to glass, and we used such a tiny amount over such a large area that I didn't judge it to be a risk that we were melting lots of water to then refreeze and prove extra icy. But, I'm no expert, so make your own judgement call!
