Climate Queens
One positive thing about being broke is that it means we're working towards leaving our planet a healthier place without even trying. Second-hand clothes, meat once a week, holidaying in the UK. We were doing all that before it became trendy.
My friends, we are the all-slaying Climate Queens.
We get to places on foot, bike wheel, or bus. We shop on facebook marketplace, or the Olio app. You give us an empty ice cream tub, and we’ll give you an infinity of possibilities. It’s a police station, a race car, a doll’s bed. Our recycling is not overflowing, because it’s all been syphoned into something else.
We rack up no air miles. We traverse no continents. We visit old friends, making new ones where we can. We splash on British beaches, kick up leaves in the ancient forests, and drop ice creams on the piers of faded seaside towns.
We don’t need holiday homes, fast fashion, latest gadgets or faddy food that's flown halfway across the world. You can keep your gas guzzlers and your TVs that are too big to fit on a wall. We don’t need vanity trips into space to feed fragile egos.
If there are pennies to be saved anywhere, we’ve figured out how. By spending less money, we use fewer resources. We take from the earth only what we need, and not a drop more.
If only everyone could be a bit more like us, eh?
