7 Free Days Out and Things to Do With Kids in Torfaen (Tor-faen)

Especially important: double check parking costs to avoid any nasty surprises on a day out that was supposed to be cheap, and obviously, be careful if you're visiting places with kids, especially where the terrain is dangerous (ruins, cliffs, beaches, slippy paths etc).

Go 300ft underground to see what working life was like for miners. Check out the safety advice, and restrictions on underground tours before you go to avoid disappointment. There are also mining galleries, exhibition spaces, and historic buildings to see.
64 acres, with lots to do including Italian Gardens, Ice Houses, Afon Lwyd Weir, Gorsedd Stone Circle, and Shell Grotto. There's also a playground, sports pitches, and a (pay for) dry ski slope. There are footpath links to the Brecon Beacons, and to Folly Tower.
A reclaimed colliery site, covering 40 hectares with grassland and lakes. Perfect for relaxing scenic walks.
Learn all about local history and culture, with lots of hands on activities for the kids throughout. Check the website for opening hours.
Pop into the visitor centre to pick up a map of the walking trails, taking you through scenic woodland, meadows, and alongside the lake. There's a lot of paid for activities available to do there.
A 17th century stone water mill, with lots of historical, agricultural, and historical arterfacts to have a look at.
