Are You Getting Everything You're Entitled to?

The first thing I want to admit here is that for a long time, I wasn't getting everything I was entitled to. I don't want to share too much of my recent past online until my son is older and I can explain it to him when he gets to the right age. (I have no idea when that will be, but I feel like my gut will tell me).

Suffice to say. Like pretty much every single mum, the split from my ex got messy and tricky, and money became impossible. But I didn't want to claim benefits, I was too ashamed to be the first person in my family to sign on. It felt like an admission of failure.

I don't feel like that anymore. Now I recognise that I am entitled to help from the system that I spent so many years paying into. I'm not a failure, I'm a fire-breathing dragon of a mama doing everything I can to protect my son against life's rockier periods.

It's not brave to suffer in silence. We're all entitled to help. Life should be bearable. Make sure you're receiving whatever help you're owed.

General Benefits Help

Have a look on the UK Government website to see what benefits you might be entitled to.

Universal Credit

This is the biggie. This covers pretty much all the benefits in the UK, all rolled into one. Have a look, and know that 41% of claimants have jobs. It's not just an unemployment thing like those who wish to stigmatise benefits would have us believe.

Have a look at a benefits calculator like Turn2Us to see what you think you might be due. You might be owed thousands. Including other things, you might be able to get help with housing costs, and childcare costs. Receiving Universal Credit can open other money saving doors like cheaper broadband, or reduction on council tax.

Child Maintanence

If you're a single parent, and struggling to work out financial obligations, (and get paid what you're owed) then try going through the Child Maintanance System. Although be aware, the system is far from perfect.

Child Benefit

If you've got kids then make sure you're receiving Child Benefit, (unless you're earning over the threshold).

Childcare

Check here to make sure you're receiving all the help towards childcare costs that you're entitled to.

Energy Grant

If you're on a low income you might be eligible for a grant to help with energy efficiency.
