We all know being a mum is an amazing but demanding gig. Between taking care of the kids, managing the house, and maybe even holding down a job, it's easy to forget about ourselves. That's why it's crucial for you to prioritise self-care. Taking time for your own well-being not only benefits you, it benefits the kids to not have a mum that's totally burned out. But, so much of the discourse surrounding it makes it sound like yet ANOTHER thing to add to your already overflowing plate. Here's some practical tips on creating more "me time," along with simple and wallet-friendly self-care ideas that you can do right at home.

Creating Time for Yourself: Finding time for self-care may seem like a challenge, but with a little planning and preparation it's doable. Here are some tips to help you make space for yourself:

  • Establish a Routine: Set aside specific times each day or week just for you. Treat these as important appointments with yourself that can't be missed. Let the family know that that is YOUR time. If you can, get someone else to watch the kids. Otherwise, set them up with an activity you know will keep them entertained for 30 minutes.
  • Get Some Support: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to your partner, family members, or trusted friends who can step in and look after the kids for a while, giving you that precious self-care time. You'd do it for other people, so let others repay the generosity.
  • Share the Load: Don't be the only one responsible for everything around the house. Delegate tasks and involve other family members. Sharing the workload frees up time for you to focus on yourself. Check out the tips and resources on the Easy Everyday page for help with handing over ownership of household chores to others.
  • Embrace Early Mornings or Late Nights: Take advantage of those quiet moments before everyone wakes up or after they've gone to bed. Use that time to do something you enjoy, whether it's reading, journaling, or just taking a breather. For me, I make sure that all the housework is done before my son's bedtime so that the evenings are all mine.

So, once you've collected a little time for yourself. What are you going to do with it? Let's run a marathon! Write a book! Paint like Picasso!

I'm joking, of course.  But doesn't it so often feel like the advice tells us that self care means being brilliant, and productive. What a load of baloney.

Do whatever it is that fills your cup, and settles that feeling of turbulance that's made a home in your tummy. Maybe that's doing a meditation, maybe it's journalling, or having a bath, or listening to your favourite podcast with a cup of tea in hand, and eyes gently closed. Here are 10 simple things you can do right now without leaving the house

  • Take Time for Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to help you relax and reduce stress. Take slow, deep breaths, filling your lungs, and exhale slowly. Repeat for a few minutes whenever you feel overwhelmed.
  • Prioritise Sleep: Aim for a consistent sleep schedule and ensure you're getting enough rest each night. Create a calming bedtime routine and create a sleep-friendly environment in your bedroom.
  • Move Your Body: Engage in physical activity that you enjoy, whether it's a workout, yoga, dancing, or simply going for a walk. Movement releases endorphins, boosts your energy, and improves your overall well-being.
  • Unplug from Technology: Take regular breaks from screens and unplug from social media. Instead, spend quality time with loved ones, read a book, or engage in activities that don't involve technology.
  • Practice Mindfulness or Meditation: Set aside a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness or meditation. Focus on the present moment, pay attention to your thoughts and feelings, and allow yourself to be fully present.
  • Pamper Yourself with a DIY Spa Session: Create your own spa experience at home. Take a relaxing bath, apply a face mask, give yourself a manicure or pedicure, and indulge in some self-care rituals that make you feel pampered.
  • Engage in Creative Activities: Tap into your creativity by engaging in activities such as drawing, coloring, writing, or playing a musical instrument. Allow yourself to express your emotions and enjoy the process.
  • Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors and connect with nature. Take a walk in the park, have a picnic, or simply sit in your garden. Nature has a calming effect and can rejuvenate your mind and spirit.
  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts, feelings, and reflections in a journal. It's a therapeutic practice that can help you gain clarity, reduce stress, and track your personal growth.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind and forgiving to yourself. Treat yourself with the same love and compassion you show to others. Celebrate your accomplishments, practice positive self-talk, and embrace self-acceptance.

Personalised Self Care Checklist

I'm going to be honest, the only way I'm going to do any of these thing is if I can tick it off a list. Otherwise there's no way that I'm remembering to drink enough water, and spend time in nature, and just plain chill for a few minutes each day.

Here's the one that I use every day, you can personalise it to make it more relevant to you and print it out.
